The Algarve

The Algarve is Portugal´s most southern region and it is well known for its sunny Mediterranean climate and breathtaking landscapes, especially the cliffs and the golden beaches.
The Algarve is not only a scenic region, a vacation with MyHoliday.pt to the Algarve means immersing yourself into the world full of scents, starting with the orange groves, wine cellars, chicken roasting on coal and the sharp smell of fish markets, right to the fresh Atlantic Ocean breeze. The senses are not only aroused by the scents, but also the thrills to be experienced, such as riding a wave on a surfboard, rushing down a water park slide, admiring the region from above as you skydive or just watch the happy smiles of your children playing in the pool.
The experience wouldn´t be complete without the kindness of the locals who are more than happy to welcome you and offer you a piece of their Algarve! The “Algarvians” are known for their openness and happy attitude to life and you are sure to gather some unique experiences while in their company. Elderly locals are especially keen to share their history, even if that is done through sign language. Generally, younger generations speak English and communication is easy.
The culinary experience will be great also, Algarve is well known for its “Bacalhau” fish dish, chicken “Piri Piri” and numerous meat dishes. You will enjoy locally farmed products and the local markets are a great place to explore the historic feeling of the region.
There are numerous beaches to be discovered all throughout the Algarve as its coastline is very large. Beach types range from an open cave to long strips of golden sand where you can walk for hours.
Notable cities are the region capital “Faro”, “Vilamoura”, “Albufeira”, “Silves”, “Portimao” and “Lagos”.
Faro is the largest city and the regional capital featuring the International Airport. There are lots of shopping opportunities in Faro ranging from boutiques to larger stores in the shopping malls.
Travelling west you will find Vilamoura, it’s a glamorous marina harbor where you will see yachts, luxury boutiques, and a casino.
Albufeira is the busiest night spot with the “strip” being its center of attention. The strip is a 2km long road with bars, pubs and nightclubs on both sides and the nightlife is very vivid up into the early morning hours.
Silves is a historic city overlooked by an ancient castle and church. Silves was an important Moorish city and trade gate to the rest of the world.
Portimao is an interesting city as it is located both by a river and the ocean. There are many excellent restaurants to be found as well as shops and a very large beach in “Praia da Rocha”. During the night time, this area is also very popular with night owls!
Lagos is an upcoming tourist hot-spot, offering you everything you would expect for a great day out and about! You can stroll the historic streets and stop for an “al fresco” lunch and then enjoy one of the numerous sea trips offered there to see the caves and the dolphins.
MyHoliday.pt is dedicated to making your stay with us as pleasant and unforgettable as possible, therefore we are committed to guiding you throughout the region.
